Abortions, no questions asked

The current law in Israel is that women are not automatically entitled to have abortions.  They must apply for approval by a committee.  Unmarried women and women below and above certain range of ages get automatic approval.  Married women are allowed to have abortion only if there is a medical or another legally recognized reason for this.

In the wake of the recent tragedies, in which 4 year old children were murdered by their mothers and/or grandfathers, the politicians are clamoring for something to be done.  A plan was indeed put together to improve monitoring of families having children at those ages.

May I suggest another solution to the problem: allow any pregnant woman, regardless of her marital, health or sociological status, to have an abortion, no questions asked, if she does not feel like having the baby.  Since the goal is that only women, who really want babies, would have them, there should be no stigma attached to having an abortion.  At least not beyond the existing stigma of not wanting to have children.

Abortion is better than killing a child or raising him, like an unwanted child, to be a criminal.

I am deaf since birth. I played with big computers which eat punched cards and spew out printouts since age 12. Ever since they became available, I work and play with desktop size computers which eat keyboard keypresses and spew out display pixels. Among other things, I developed software which helped the deaf in Israel use the telephone network, by means of home computers equipped with modems. Several years later, I developed Hebrew localizations for some cellular phones, which helped the deaf in Israel utilize the cellular phone networks. I am interested in entrepreneurship, Science Fiction and making the world more accessible to people with disabilities.

  1. The trouble is that there are too many idiots breeding more idiots. Anyone can get pregnant – it isn’t particularly clever and this view that having babies is absolutely essential for “total fulfillment” is particularly abhorrent and alien to me not to mention primitive.

On the other hand, in this day and age, I don’t think abortion should ever be used as an alternative to contraception. The bottom line is, if you don’t want kids, don’t have them – if you don’t like them, don’t have them, if you can’t afford them, don’t have them – END OF

  2. I wish it was that simple. you just reminded me of the “not the nine O’clock news” sketch where a mom comes in to the doctor’s office with a baby, and a nerdy 11YO and asks to have an abortion. “Well, the procedure is delicate”, says the doctor. “It’s important to know how long it has been since conception…”

The mom looks at her annoying 11YO and thinks for a while… “136 months!” she finally answers.

Abortions in Israel ARE pretty much automatic, even for married women, but that’s not a solution for child abuse. the solution to that is education, like force every parent to participate in some small, interactive group with a sotial parenting. call it “basic parenting lessons” that are a must if you want to get child pension from the state, and the social workers get to see what kind of people are showing up…
